Your GBP Home Performance Consultant will conduct a detailed survey of your home from top to bottom, identifying not only the major energy leaks, but also locating any health or safety issues in your home. The Green Building Pros use a holistic approach to your home, that will not only guide you to energy savings that will help your wallet, but also make sure that you and your family can breath easy in a comfortable, healthy home.

What Happens during an Energy Audit?

On the day of your GBP Home Energy Audit, your home energy consultant will come to your home and sit down with you to listen to your energy and home health concerns. After listening to you, your consultant will begin by discussing your homes energy use according to your past bills. This will reveal to you what the overall trends are, and give the consultant an idea as to where to look for easy fixes.

Next your consultant will make drawings of your home, and take detailed measurements to be used later in a detailed energy model of you home. The consultant will then begin to set up for the various scientific tests that will be performed on your home including:

Blower Door Test: This test uses a calibrated fan in placed in your doorway to calculate how much your home leaks to the outside. This measurement is key in understanding how your home uses energy, and how much can easily be reduced.

Duct Blaster Test: If your home has a forced air heating or cooling system, your consultant will check its integrity by performing a duct blaster test. The test uses another calibrated fan to pressurize your ductwork to determine any performance issues that you may have.

Thermography: This test uses a high resolution Infrared Camera to take thermal images of your home's building assemblies. This is a very valuable test for information; think of it an X-Ray machine for your home. This test will reveal how your homes air barrier and insulation assemblies are performing. As well as peer through the wall to find hidden moisture pathways that are otherwise difficult or impossible to identify.

Combustion Appliance Testing: If you use fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil, or propane to heat your home, this test is a must to find out how your systems are performing. Your consultant will measure the dangerous byproducts of combustion, such as carbon monoxide, that every combustion appliance produces. It is critical for the health and safety of you and your family that these appliances, i.e. furnace, hot water heater, cooking range, be functioning properly. We will also ensure that these appliances are properly vented.

Gas Leak Detection: Is there a natural gas smell in or around your home, this test will find a leak if there is one.

Moisture Meter: This test finds out just how saturated with moisture structures or wall assemblies are in your home.

Then...
After a full battery of tests, your GBP Home Energy Consultant will take the information collected during your home visit, and produce a detailed, easy to read report that will explain in detail, how your house is performing. This report is called the Green Building Pros Home Performance Assessment (HPA). Contained within the HPA, you will find how to improve your homes performance using cost effective upgrades that range from air sealing, insulating, new appliances, to whole house retrofits. Each upgrade will have a description of what the upgrade is and what its Savings to Investment Ratio (SIR) will be. This simple, yet crucial benchmark is key in determining what upgrades are cost effective.
